Someday

Someday, when our time has come
and there is nothing to hold us
back from each other,

when we feel the fit of one hand
in another with such delicious delicacy
every point of contact in the curve
of thumb and the curl of fingers
answers another prayer,

when our once distant hearts
fall with our step and we are
free of all confession, we shall
walk to the Lake of Forgiveness
where a hundred thousand
lotus flowers blossom
and run backward through
our unlived lives,
our broken hearts unbreaking,
and, with innocent eyes reclaimed,
fall forever in love again
for the first time.

This poem has been hanging around in my drafts since I published The Heartbreak of Desire back in February 2019. It seemed appropriate to post it now that we are in the confines of home-stay and now that the longing to be free in the world has cracked us open to each other in new ways.

Whose hand do you long
to feel in yours again?

What if this time were a chance
to unbreak our broken hearts,
to reclaim our innocent eyes
and look again at those we love
with fresh eyes?
