The Lovesick Sea

Lovesick Sea

My heart knew you before
I began to feel the grip of time,
before the world rolled out
to meet me like a red carpet,
before I knew what it was
to be brokenhearted.

My heart knew you long before
you stepped through the winter doorway
tossing me on the love sick sea.

Even before that, my heart knew you
like the first blossom of the first spring
and knew you would be in every blossom after that wherever I go humming

I was lost in the ocean
of your eyes; lost in an ache
I can’t control and
I will not forsake.

If ever I’ve had occasion to pray,
this is it. I’m not yet on my knees,
but now that I am in the grip of time,
I am hungry for everything you teach me
about loving and letting go

Most of us have been shamed at some point along the way. Shame is a powerful social mechanism because we all have a deep need for belonging. Although shame can keep us humble, it often turns into an inner tyrant that can run roughshod over us diminishing and defeating us. This poem celebrates the times when shame loses its grip and, if it comes, it simply flows through us as does any other passing thought or emotion. Then we can let our changing thoughts and feelings become notes in the music of our lives.

Make A Prayer Of Your Day

Make A Prayer Of Your Day

The poem reminds me of how easily we fall into the slumber of our day-to-day life and get caught up in our take-for-granted world. Perhaps that is why we make and need drama. The dramatic has a better chance of getting through than the everyday and commonplace. Yet, it is in the commonplace and everyday in which our lives are lived. Poetry has the power to penetrates the veil and re-imagine our daily lives from a soulful perspective. Poetry can bridge the two, offering a way of seeing the everyday imbued with life and meaning.

Dear Longing

Dear Longing

Longing is a deep and abiding desire for some thing or someone in life. Although many people find this feeling frustrating, it is actually one of the most beautiful and most universal feelings. It is what drives us on through thick and thin, what gives us purpose in and feeds our passion. It is what binds us our hearts together in a deep sense of “belonging” to each other. What or whom do you long for in life? To what or to whom do you belong?

Lessons From The Pandemic

Lessons From The Pandemic

In this era of suspect surfaces and social distance, now that we are sheltering in place, we have a chance to “face the barren truth of our lives” and to seek “new ways of loving the untouchable in each other.” The pandemic is forcing us out of our usual routines and challenging us to create new patterns. What old ways in your life would you like to let die during this period of transformation? What new ways would you like to invite? What old ways in the world would you like to be transformed and what new ways would you like to invite into life?

Based On A True Story

Based On A True Story

Sometimes, as a poet, I like to personify an idea, like Truth or Love or Freedom, and then write about the idea as if it is a living presence. This is a great way to get at my relationship with the idea and to give myself permission to perceive or change that relationship by changing the story I attach to it. That is the essential idea of this poem, which invites the question: What is your relationship to Truth? How would you personify or characterize Truth? Would it help if you changed the storyline?
