You know when you read something and feel your soul start to dance because the words are meant for you right now, this moment? That’s how I feel as I am beginning to read your book! Thank you, thank you...for sharing your wisdom - for writing such a powerful book

You may feel yourself
to be a tiny doorway,
but yours is the entryway
for the entire universe
to turn into life.

Fling it open.

A poem in The Work Of Being Your Self

What is the universe manifesting through your uniqueness?

Only you can answer the one question that life: asks of you: why are you (your unique self) here (in this unique situation)? It’s a question you must answer anew in each instance.

Are You Your Self?

“Just be yourself.” This advice, given when someone is facing a challenge or opportunity, advocating that our natural self will win the day, is certainly a vote of confidence, but it is also nearly always useless. The counsel is too vague to be useful. It implies that this magical accomplishment should be easy and effortless and the most natural thing we could do.

Why can't we just be our self?

The problem is that our “natural self” is a mixed bag at best, a blend of empowering and limiting beliefs and experiences and a messy mix of worries and wishes. We have the capacity, and the curse, to shape who we are and define our "self."  A human life is a work-in-progress and we define our self most clearly when we face specific dilemmas. This collection of poetry, questions to ponder, and prompts for writing, helps you to navigate five dynamic dilemmas in life that define who you are and compose the life you live. If you truly want to be yourself, this book is a must read and a worthy companion to anyone who wants to live a genuine life and not the life others and the world might dictate.

The Transformational Poet’s work takes you on a personal journey like no other. Each piece brings you closer to ‘your true self’ and awakens all of your hopes and dreams.
— Tiffany Roselt -- Brisbane, Australia

The book is divided into five sections and each section explores a dichotomy that we must balance in our lives. These are not conflicts you can resolve once and for all, check them off the to-do list, and then lay them to rest. They are dynamic dilemmas: each is like a continuum and there is no one right place to set up as a permanent residence. Each must be renegotiated at different points in life and each may require a different adaptive blend for different moments. The section titles are:

  • Safety and Risk
  • Head and Heart
  • Fight and Flow
  • Self and Other
  • Here and There

Nick LeForce writes with his blood. His passionate, authentic search for the Real courses through every line and leaves its mark in the heart of the reader. His poetry illumines “the newness of things already known,” and never more so than when he speaks of love - the love of God, the love of another, the love that marries heaven and earth. Read his work and you will see the world with fresh eyes.
— Roger Housden

The structure of the book reflects the title: it is intended as a workbook. No one can substitute for you when it comes to living your own life and only you can do the difficult and often puzzling work of being yourself.  Avoid the work at the risk of living at the whim of the world and ending your life with the top regret expressed by the dying according to Nurse Bronnie Ware: “I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.” This is not new. Over 2500 years ago, Socrates said it another way: “The unexamined life is not worth living.”
