Read MoreDeath has been a long-time companion to me in writing , starting in 1977 as the key figure in an unpublished fiction trilogy, "A Game With Death." Nothing puts things in perspective more than death. Here's an interesting exercise: Imagine Death comes to you, hands you a letter, and you are surprised to find it is your own last words. What do you imagine you might read?

When we truly consider how lucky we are simply to be alive, when we receive the gifts of life with thanks giving, when we transform our suffering into lessons for living and love of life, we enter a magic kingdom and live a blessed life. Gratitude may be the best antidote to the cynicism of the modern world.
Read MoreAs a teenager, before departing on my first airplane trip alone, I bought a copy of a Science Fiction magazine that included a short story about a man that stopped time by experiencing the whole of his life, from birth to death, all-at-once. The idea fascinated me and has been with me since. Here is my poetic translation of this idea: How wide is your embrace for your own life?

Perhaps the story reveals how we lost our ability to be "naked," that is to be transparent, or even more accurate, to be honest with ourselves. Fig leaves then represent our cover up. Our secret shame is perpetuated by a society that pins our individual worth on money and things. On what do you base your self-worth?
Read MoreOne of the sad truths of this being human is that we deny and neglect our true sprit. We often need to be hammered down before we relent and let go of the reigns we use to try to control everything. What do you think it takes for us to awaken to our selves and our lives?
Read MoreWe all long to be "seen," to be beheld by another with accepting eyes, by one who "stands in the face of our suffering and still sees our beauty;" and who can "witness our weakness and still see our strength." I don't always achieve it, but I get glimpses of the possibility, especially when teaching and reciting poetry. Every time, I feel the transformative nature of simply being seen and the healing power of an accepting heart.
